Trailer Innovation 2021 3rd Place Van Eck Smart rollerbed with NMLU

Expert trailer manufacturer Van Eck has taken the 3rd place at Trailer Innovation 2021 Award category “Environment” with the innovation Smart Rollerbed Vehicles with NMLU (New Modular Loading Unit).

Van Eck is the only trailer manufacturer to design and produce its own rollerbeds. Since 1983 Van Eck has been expertly producing rollerbed box and curtainsider vehicles, that are of the highest quality, impeccably designed and manufactured to function with precision, presenting unparalleled operational efficiencies in air cargo business and in special general cargo applications. Van Eck also has the expertise to transform any trailer into a rollerbed vehicle with rollerbed platfom vehicles custom-built for special uses.

Taking its inspiration from air cargo like loading and unloading efficiencies as well as packing standardization and warehouse management ease of use, Van Eck expert team had been working in European commission backed Horizon 2020 project developing smart loading units namely NMLU – new modular loading unit to streamline all general cargo packing loading, unloading and documentation process like the air cargo business.

Smart rollerbed vehicles with NMLU are a new concept and have the vision to transform the logistics system with fast automated loading and securing of cargo. Next to those operations, smart rollerbed vehicles with NMLU also provide betterment directly in warehousing operations and at large in railway, ferry and aircargo operations. The practicality and safety side of this concept addresses health and safety issues during loading operations, including COVID risk.

For NMLU’s to present the efficiencies, calculated to be %20 loading capacity increase, and overall system efficiency of 50%, the trailers that will work with NMLU’s need to have rollerbed systems. The quality of rollerbeds, as well as the trailers, the precision fitting and durability under all conditions of use guarantee the success of the overall NMLU enabled system. All these qualities are presented in Van Eck box, curtainsider, and recently developed rollerbed 45ft containers focusing on the efficiencies that can be quickly generated in intermodal transport. As intermodal transport is the most similar to air cargo logistics systems among other general cargo logistics and warehousing, it is envisioned intermodal logistics with central hubs of train stations and ferry docks would be the starting point to implement the NMLU system transformation. Recently developed Van Eck rollerbed 45ft container is the first step in general implementation and initial commercialization of the project.

Smart rollerbed vehicles with NMLU’s load capacity efficiencies not only contribute to lowering the CO2 emission but also reduces waste to further contribute to sustainability by eliminating the need for plastic and box packaging.

As the expert manufacturer in producing precision and high-quality trailers fitted with its in-house design and manufacture rollerbed, Van Eck has taken the first steps to transform the general cargo operations ecosystem by providing the most efficient high quality and durable rollerbed vehicles that can seamlessly work with NMLU’s to the market. Van Eck is proud to continue to support this eco-friendly system beyond initial innovation to full commercialization.

A fine industry collaboration wins the Trailer Innovation 2017

Kässbohrer Safety Bitumen Tanker, K STS.F 32 with Remote Control for Discharge is a fine example of industry collaboration, between Hoyer Bitumen-Logistik GmbH and Kässbohrer Fahrzeugwerke GmbH, which improves European best practices for occupational safety and health, as well as discharge operation safety and efficiency in general.

The innovative character of K.STS.F 32 is improving the safety of the driver who is operating the tanker during bitumen discharge. Taking its inspiration from the years of experience of Managing Director of Hoyer Bitumen-Logistik Mr. Carsten Meyer, combined with the innovation culture of Kässbohrer, K.STS.F 32 is the winner of Trailer Innovation 2017 in safety category.

Also, the collaboration with the Hoyer Bitumen-Logistik GmbH is the perfect example for Tırsan Solutions vision – becoming the leader in trailer solutions through long-term partnerships.

Digital Trailer Control to increase safety for curtainsider operators

The project was born with Kässbohrer engineers deciding to increase the safety of drivers and operators during the usage of mechanical controls of a curtainsider. As an innovation project, the main challenge was to revolutionize the very traditional manual control into a centralized digital control.

After the Kässbohrer R&D team first initiated the concept development phase to define project objectives, OTAM has developed the software needed for the electronic control system. The software then used by Kässbohrer in the application of the DTC unit into the curtainsider semi-trailer. The test phase was carried out by two parties.

DTC’s user-friendly interface accelerates the operations without compromising operator’s safety.  DTC has alternative user interfaces. “Touchscreen”, can be customized according to each customer demand according to standard equipment in his/her fleet, while comparable to smart key applications in the automotive industry, “Wireless Smart Key,” is also acts as an immobilizer, in addition to system controls.

The main value of DTC is minimizing occupational injury risks which generate a substantial cost in terms of healthcare, productivity and administrative costs. Furthermore, deteriorated quality of life of the injured and his/her family is the most important cost which requires the immediate attention. As European Agency for Safety and Health at Work suggests outdoor workplaces have to be arranged to avoid injury risks, DTC can be implemented as an accident prevention tool and assist the user for a safe ride.

Regarding operational and driving safety;

  • DTC eliminates the risk of unauthorized use of parking brake mechanism. According to pre-sets, parking brakes can only be activated on remote control unit by entering a password.
  • The electromechanical landing gear can be controlled from DTC from a safe distance. DTC will either set the parking brake automatically as soon as the landing gears are fully extracted, or warn the user until the landing gears has been fully extracted.
  • DTC will automatically check loads on the king pin and the axles and load distributions. If there is an overloading or a wrong distribution of loads between king pin and axles, DTC will prevent trailer to move or warn driver according to pre-sets.
  • DTC can set the bumper (Rear Underrun Protection) position – folded or unfolded. If user forgets to set the bumper, e.g. for driving purposes; DTC will set automatically the bumper for driving position, or warn the user for the risky situation.
  • DTC will warn the user for improper condition of customs security cable (TIR), which might need to be reworked (cut and weld).
  • DTC have additional blank ports which can used to control/monitor other digital functions of trailer e.g. according to status of door sensor (if exist), DTC can warn driver if the door is open.
